Education is a universal right because it determines a person’s future. Education is becoming more important as the youth population continues to increase exponentially in Uganda. Current research shows that the world needs to focus on the education sector to improve development. One type of education proven to aid in low-resource countries like Uganda is non-formal education because it is flexible enough to fit the needs of learners in communities. Youth empowerment has become a popular method for non-formal education because of its ability to transform a community. Uganda is a developing country with one of the largest youth populations in the world and education is lagging to improve quality of life.
Girls like Mayra in Uganda are disproportionately discriminated against in terms of education; they face harsher barriers when trying to gain an education and it has left the female population disenfranchised, despite government efforts to close the gap.
Education is vitally important to international development because of the multitude of positive benefits it brings to not just children, but whole communities. Benefits of education include economic development, better governance, improved health and gender equality, and increased resilience.
